SquashEmpower, an urban youth development organization, seeks to combine the sport of squash with academic tutoring and mentoring for under-served, disadvantaged youth in the District of Columbia. The group aspires to develop positive self-esteem and discipline through academic, athletic and personal achievement.
SquashEmpower is working with the DC Public Schools Chancellors office to provide up to 10 scholarships to DC youth. The scholarships will include clinics, lessons, tournaments, league, equipment and more. From this group 3 or 4 students will be selected to participate in more specialized clinics and interstate tournaments. The program also includes academic tutoring. All costs will be met by SquashEmpower.
Scholarships are available to parents of high school or middle school students who demonstrate an inability to otherwise participate in squash and academic programming. Contact the coordinator Connie Barnes firstname.lastname@example.org for details; deadline for applications is Nov 10 2011. Successful candidates will be presented with their award at the Grand Opening Party at Chevy Chase Athletic Club on Dec 10, 2011.
We will post new programs by SquashEmpower here and you can visit their website for more information.
