Bronze Nationals Report

Many NCS Juniors came home with trophies from the Bronze National Championships at Yale Sunday April 25, 2010, and those who did not can be proud of their achievements. Every player who entered proved he or she is competitive in a nationally contested tournament!

Here is a report on the nine NCS players who played through the last day of the tournament:

Geoffrey Keating, playing up an age division in BU19, took second place, losing in the finals to Baltimore's David Snyder. Just two years ago, Geoff made it to the semis in the BU15 Bronze Nationals, so you could say he made more than four years of progress in less than two years.

Zach Ho lost a very tight 5 game match in the BU15 semifinals this morning, with two games decided 11-9 and one 12-10! Zach went on to win third place in another closely contested five game match. This was Zach's first national tournament, a fantastic result!

Alex Alvarez won third place in BU17, [...Read More...]

The FitzGerald Cup stays in Washington

Report on the Annual FitzGerald Cup Competition

Prepared by Glenn Canner

The FitzGerald Cup stays in Washington!

The 62nd annual FitzGerald Cup competition between Washington and Baltimore was played on January 9th at the University Club in Washington with the Washington team extending its winning streak to 9 years and its overall historic dominance to 44 wins against only 18 losses.

The Washington team won the competition 10 matches to 3, but the outcome was more in doubt than the score might suggest as several of the matches were highly competitive and could have broken the other way. Once again, led by youth, and their recent college squash experience, the Washington team was extremely strong at the top of the lineup.

Led by Dan Petrie (all American at Brown), Hesham El Halaby (all American at Princeton) and Patrick Harris (star at Rochester) the Washington team was a force to be reckoned with.  Overall, [...Read More...]

NCS Women Victorious in Lacy Cup!

NCS Women Victorious in Lacy Cup!

The National Capital Squash team of Fiona Chambers, Sartaz Ahmed, Donna Sharpe, Leslie Connolly, Schuyler Haynes, Carole Grunberg and Larissa Stephenson defeated the Baltimore team, 6-1, in the annual Lacy Cup competition which was held on Saturday January 9. There was intense competition at all playing levels and all players enjoyed the friendly rivalry. Fiona, Donna, Leslie and Carole did not drop a game in their matches. In 4 hotly contested close games, Schuyler Haynes lost to Brooksie Riley who is a recent transplant to Baltimore and played for the NCS team last year! At the #1 spot, former Trinity teammates Larissa Stephenson and Kim Palterman battled it out, with Larissa ultimately triumphant, 3 games to 1. After the official competition, several of the Baltimore players stayed to play additional friendly games with their DC opponents. The afternoon was capped off with drinks and snacks at local watering hole.
